Barney aids you in escaping the interrogation room within the train station. First of all Barney, posing to be a combine guard. But then just a hope begins to escape you you are reunited with a some familiar faces. So, the scene is set and with no weapons or allies you feel very alone, like its “Gordon vs the world”. Its clear that there is no reasoning with combine and the entire dynamic and feel of the game is summerized fantastically in the first sequence. From the moment you see daylight you are fully away of the present danger, and like the residents you scurry through allies, derelict buildings and rooftops just to avoid any military presence. You are taunted and bullied at every turn by combine foot soldiers. Every ones clothes are wearthered and discoloured as fashion, along with many other very human traits, shattered under boot of the combine. Even the name “City 17” sounds oppressive and categorized.Īs you leave the train and journey across the platform you quickly realize humans are nothing more than cattle, herded into pens to receive food rations and medicine. As you regain your senses you realize you are on a train arriving at “City 17” a combine ruled relic of humanities once strong grip on the planet. So you awake in a dream state with the ominous G-man prompting you to get up as you have “work to do”.
If you would like some information on the “combine” please see paragraph four of my first article. Half-Life 2 works on the premiss that Gordon decided to work for G-man. At the end of part one you must either choose to work for G-man or fight a fight that cant be won.
